「SOCIOLOGY OF ART & THE ART OF SOCIOLOGY」

THE USES OF ETHNOGRAPHY

The ethnographic method is a central feature in the work of sociologists and anthropologists. Increasingly, too, artists have come to resemble ethnographers in their field- and context- specific research towards their work. After describing some of the ways I have used ethnography in my own research about different topics — the Japanese art world; global business entrepreneurship in the cultural industries; migration and multiculturalism in Europe — we will discuss how different types of ethnography might be useful to advanced students at GEIDAI.

References will include classic works by Howard Becker, Pierre Bourdieu, and Michael Burawoy, as well as recent writings by Sarah Thornton (Seven Days in the Art World) and recent artworks by Sendai-based Japanese photographer,Lieko Shiga.

エイドリアン・ファベル氏：カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校(UCLA)社会学部准教授として勤務後、現在、パリ政治学院社会学部教授。2007年（独）国際交流基金　安倍フェローとして日本へ来日して以降、日本の現代アートシーンに関するオブザーバー、ライター、キュレーターとして日本と海外にて幅広く活動している。ART-iTをはじめとする日本のオンライン・マガジンではブログを執筆し、幅広い層からの支持を得ている。また、日本国内のみならずArt Forum や Art in Americaといったような海外での執筆活動も展開。英国生まれ、パリ在住。http://www.adrianfavell.com
